5SOS' Michael Clifford talks mental health
For most celebrities, mental health issues aren't something they openly address.
But Michael Clifford, one-fifth of the popular boy band 5 Seconds of Summer, shared his struggles with fans during a concert in Detroit Wednesday night.
"I was fixing some problems with my mental health," the 19-year-old singer shared, explaining the Australian band's recent pause in their Rock Out With Your Socks Out tour. "I just saw a therapist real quick on the break we had."
Fans in the audience managed to capture the speech on video:
5SOS is known for their loyal young fanbase, and supporters responded to Clifford's speech on social media with the #WeLoveYouMichael hashtag, which became a worldwide trend.
In the band's appearance Friday morning on Good Morning America, Clifford clarified his onstage comments.
"I think [the speech] was taken a little out of context," he said. It was a thing that happened for me, but it's all good now."
It's been a rough go for Clifford this summer, after he suffered burns to the face after getting hit with stage pyrotechnics during a June performance in London.
5 Seconds of Summer's new album Sounds Good Feels Good is set for an Oct. 23 release. Last year, the band's successful self-titled debut topped the Billboard albums chart and sold more than 3 million copies worldwide.
