Devo singer apologizes for 9/11-themed wedding

Who would use a 9/11 theme for their wedding?

According to TMZ and a couple of leaked pictures, it was Devo co-founder Gerald Casale and his bride Krista Napp, who got married in Santa Monica, Calif., on Friday, the 14th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Acccording to Casale, it's not what it looks like. He says he was set up. He says there's another side to the story. But he's apologized anyway.

The TMZ story on the wedding landed Monday, featuring several pictures of Casale and Napp looking happy and posing with two Twin Towers-shaped cakes hung with their faces, and party favors in the shape of box cutters.

"The co-founder of Devo and his bride hung their faces off a Twin Towers cake to celebrate their marriage with the most bizarre, and possibly offensive, wedding reception ... EVER," TMZ huffed.

Casale, 67, has not yet posted another tweet explaining his side, but he talked to the New York Daily News Tuesday, saying he knows the cake was in "such bad taste" and why the pictures would offend people.

Casale said that a friend showed up with the cake as a surprise, and he believes it was a set-up to leak the photos to TMZ.

“It had to be one of the guests,” he told the paper. “I feel pretty betrayed, like I was set up. So it’s all unfortunate. One dumb thing led to another .... and then becomes a big incendiary story."

Casale's representative has not returned a call for further comment.

Meanwhile, Casale says he's trying to calm his 26-year-old wife.

“If she doesn’t leave, I’ll be happy,” he said. “It ruined our honeymoon, my wife is just devastated.”

Casale co-founded the post-punk band Devo and was co-principle songwriter of such songs as Whip It, Freedom of Choice and Beautiful World. Now he directs videos and commercials.
