Autopsy: Heart infection killed boy-band promoter Lou Pearlman
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's office revealed Tuesday that boy-band mastermind Lou Pearlman died from an infection of the inner lining of the heart following a valve replacement. Their report said he suffered from a condition in which the heart valve struggles to fully open.
Pearlman, 62, died Friday in a South Florida federal prison, where he was serving 25 years for running a $300 million Ponzi scheme.
Pearlman's businesses, which he operated under the name Trans Continental, included a record label, which signed the Backstreet Boys, 'NSync and O-Town.
But he falsified documents to encourage investments in an airline that did not exist. Authorities uncovered the scheme in 2006. Pearlman fled the country but was indicted on counts of bank, mail and wire fraud in June 2007. He was convicted in May 2008 and reported to prison that year.
The Backstreet Boys and Aaron Carter were among the hundreds of parties who filed suit against Pearlman. They alleged he had unfairly kept the lion's share of their earnings for himself.
