Playlist: What's Dessa listening to?
Listeners may have discovered Dessa on the Hamilton Mixtape's Congratulations or on Lin-Manuel Miranda's Puerto Rico benefit single Almost Like Praying, or her work with the indie hip-hop collective Doomtree, or perhaps her most recent studio album, 2013's Parts of Speech.
Whatever fans' origin point may be, there's now a new album to discover from the singer/rapper, Chime, out now. Dessa celebrated the release by compiling a playlist for Paste BN titled "models and mentors and bunkmates," featuring "musicians I've toured with, learned from or admired from afar," she told Paste BN in an email.
See the playlist here, featuring songs from Sylvan Esso, Logic and more.
Disparate Youth, Santigold
Effortlessly cool. Not everyone can pull off laissez-faire with backup dancers.
Calling Out, Monakr
The sort of pop music that renders your whole life cinematic — even if you’re just grocery shopping in headphones.
Last War, Haley Bonar
Heavy, clever, and understated — a rock song that turns the blade sideways to get between the ribs.
Kill V. Maim, Grimes
Get out of the way, it’s Grimes. And she travels only by pogo stick or steamroller.
Over, Tove Lo
Tove Lo periodically reminds me I’m not too old to feel like a teenager: big, bold, angry and in love.
Spread, OutKast
Andre’s signature blend of sexy and utterly confusing.
Under Pressure, Logic
Dusty vinyl drum-breaks, a couple flipped samples, and rap patterns that don’t leave much room to inhale.
Almost Like Praying, Lin-Manuel Miranda
A banger for the greater good (proceeds from this song benefit hurricane relief in Puerto Rico).
Die Young, Sylvan Esso
That feeling you get when you suspect you’re living through a moment you’ll remember for a long time. Nostalgia in the present tense.
Dreams of Flight, Part I, Taj Raj
Sometimes a beautiful thing is its own explanation.
