Compton is one 'Krazy' place for YG
From N.W.A to Kendrick Lamar, Compton, Calif., has produced more than its share of hip-hop luminaries. With his debut album My Krazy Life (**½ out of four) , YG has crafted a worthy new chapter to the city's legacy.
Like his Compton forefathers, YG effectively weaves harsh reality raps into hypnotic grooves; his West Coast drawl bristles with menace under grim synth chords on BPT, while booming street anthem My N---- recruits Young Jeezy and Rich Homie Quan.
YG pads the album with a requisite club hit (Left, Right) and sexed-up R&B cut (Do It to Ya, a nod to Tha Dogg Pound's Let's Play House), but also reveals pieces of his "krazy" life on Really Be (Smokin N Drinkin) and closer Sorry Momma. A solid first effort.
