Royal baby watch: Kate visits National Portrait Gallery

Bump alert!

Lovely and pregnant Duchess Catherine of Cambridge, 31, made a public appearance today, stepping out to view a new portrait of her at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Clutching her clutch in front of her, she stood to view the work of British artist Paul Emsley.

The duchess, who wore a burgundy dress by Whistles, reports The Guardian, was joined by hubby Prince William for a private viewing of the painting on Friday morning before it goes on display for the public in the afternoon.

The royal couple spent some 10 minutes looking at the artwork privately then met Emsley and his wife, Susanne, and daughter Marie.

The Daily Mail reports that when Emsley was asked what Kate thought of his work, the artist replied: "I think, from what I can see this morning, she's delighted with it. I'm very happy about that."

But not everyone loves it. Robin Simon, editor of the British Art Journal and Daily Mail art critic, said "Fortunately, the Duchess of Cambridge looks nothing like this in real life. I'm really sad to say this is a rotten portrait."

Harsh!

And Piers Morgan tweeted: "Mona Kate."

The Cambridges later attended a private breakfast. Among the guests were the duchess's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and her brother and sister, James and Pippa.
