Madonna sells painting for $7 million
Madonna, who struck a punk pose at Monday's Met gala, is now $7.2 million richer.
The Material Girl sold a 1921 painting she has owned since 1990, Three Women at the Red Table by Fernand Leger, at a New York City auction Tuesday night.
The abstract work, reports AP, had a pre-sale estimate of $5 million to $7 million. It sold at Sotheby's for $7.2 million.
Proceeds of the sale will benefit the Ray of Light Foundation, which supports girls' education in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.
"I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable — educating girls!" Madonna said last month.
She bought the work at Sotheby's for $3.4 million.
