'Spider-Man' swings into New York
NEW YORK – You know it's summer when Gotham's legendary webslinger is back in town.
The cast of the The Amazing Spider-Man 2, opening May 2, premiered their film at the Ziegfeld on Thursday night.
New to the franchise: Dane DeHaan as crafty billionaire Harry Osborn and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx as schlubby electric engineer Max Dillion who, through a freak accident, turns into Electro, a beast with enough power to shut down the endless flashing lights in Times Square.
"I knew I wanted to be an actor when I was a kid playing superheroes," says DeHaan. "Sometimes kids are a little scared of me. We go and visit schools. They look at me strange, but then they warm up to me."
Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and his real-life and on-screen squeeze, Emma Stone, separately walked the massive red carpet, decorated with a huge arachnid, of course.
And while the fans were quite vocal in their support of the film, Garfield says that when his press duties are done, he's able to live a very normal life.
"Oh yeah, definitely. Not during these times," says Garfield. "I'm happy to talk about Spider-Man. I'm able to be invisible quite easily. I have really good mates, one of whom is here with me tonight. He's a nice reminder of how ridiculous this all this."
