HQ Trivia host Scott Rogowsky opens up about co-founder Collin Kroll's sudden death
Normally goofy HQ Trivia host Scott Rogowsky got very serious as he opened up about a big loss on Sunday.
Rogowsky, who rose to Internet fame hosting the quiz app's live broadcasts, addressed users after the death of Colin Kroll, co-founder and CEO of the app. Kroll was found dead at age 34 in his apartment Sunday by the New York Police Department.
"It is with a heavy heart I must share some tragic news that has befallen the HQ family," Rogowsky said.
"Colin, or C.K. as we called him, was a true visionary who changed the game twice — first with Vine and then with this very app that you're seeing and hearing me through right now, HQ Trivia," he continued. "Collin was a good friend and colleague, a person of compassion and generosity, and the sudden loss at HQ leaves all of us shocked and saddened."
After Rogowsky spoke, the app aired a tribute to Kroll instead of its scheduled 9 p.m. Sunday game.
In honor of Kroll's love for animals and his dog Tater, Rogowsky announced that HQ was donating what would've been the night's $25,000 prize to the Humane Society.
An NYPD spokesperson confirmed Kroll's death to Paste BN Sunday. The department was conducting a wellness check on Kroll when it found him in his apartment, and he was pronounced "dead on arrival" at 12:18 a.m. ET in what is believed to be a possible drug overdose.
Prior to co-founding HQ Trivia, Kroll was one of the creators behind the six-second streaming service Vine. After Twitter bought Vine in 2012 for $30 million, he created HQ with fellow former Vine co-founder Rus Yusupov.
