Every dog has its day, as the saying goes. And when it comes to treats, most dogs would like that to be every day! Good dogs, and bad ones, are always up for a tasty snack. But dog treats can be expensive. So, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative to store-bought snacks, consider making your own. Homemade treats are sure to get your pup’s tail wagging and will taste extra sweet thanks to that cup of love you'll add to them. Pup muffins are easy to create and can be made in a miniature variety or full-sized, depending on the size of your dog. The only difference is the dimension of the muffin tin.

How to make your own dog treats
Making muffins for your dog is very similar to making them for yourself.Muffin ingredients:
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup peanut butter
- ½ mashed banana
- ½ cup unsweetened apple sauce
- ½ cup pumpkin purée
Frosting ingredients:
- ½ mashed banana
- ½ tbsp peanut butter
To make the muffins:
- Whisk together flour and baking soda in a small bowl.
- In a separate bowl, combine pumpkin purée, egg, applesauce and peanut butter.
- Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.
- Use an ice cream scoop to dollop the batter into a muffin tin. The muffins will expand as they bake, so don’t overfill the cups.
- Bake at 350ºF for 15-20 minutes.
- While they are baking, mix the banana and peanut butter for a frosting.
- Let the muffins cool before frosting and feeding.
You can also add apples, blueberries or carrots for extra flavor. These extra goodies can be folded in once the wet and dry ingredients are combined.

Can my dog eat that?
Dogs are very skilled at convincing their owners and owners' friends to slip them some food from the human’s table. However, not all food consumed by humans is safe for dogs.
Many fruits and vegetables are dog-diet approved and some can also provide additional health benefits. As a good rule of thumb, avoid feeding Fido any foods high in sugar. Instead, opt for additive-free foods. According to the American Kennel Club, some of the foods you should not give your dog include:
- Almonds.
- Chocolate.
- Cinnamon.
- Garlic.
- Ice Cream.
- Macadamia nuts.
