How to make a new toy for your dog with your old clothes: Video tutorial

Sometimes it’s hard not to spoil your pup with a new toy every time you go to the store. Instead, consider saving a few bucks and giving your pet a toy that already smells like their favorite thing: you!
Homemade goods can be appreciated by humans and canines, especially if they are tail-waggingly delicious dog treats. However, you can also upcycle some of your unworn or unused clothes to make your pet a toy they can chew, pull or cuddle. All it requires is an old shirt or towel, a pair of scissors and a little bit of coordination.

Best toys for dogs
When it comes to buying toys for your pooch, there are some things to keep in mind, like the size of your pet and how they like to play. Smaller toys can be a choking hazard for larger dogs, and large toys might not be enjoyed by smaller pups.
Toys aren’t just for enjoyment; they can help your dog bond with you, get more exercise and stimulate their brains. Having a variety of toys can help give your pup an enriched playtime.
Dogs may like balls or frisbees for fetch, bones for chewing, treat-dispensing toys, comfort toys they like to snuggle at nap time and squeaky toys when they feel extra playful. Some dogs may need to be supervised at all times when playing with some of their toys. Heavy chewers may destroy or eat their toys if left unsupervised for too long.

DIY tug toy for dogs
Many dogs find comfort in the scent of their owners, so making a toy out of your old clothing for them to enjoy makes sense.
To make a no-sew, DIY tug toy:
- Cut an old shirt, blanket or towel into strips. Make sure it’s washed without fabric softener or scent boosters, ensure it’s 100% cotton and doesn’t have any logos or things printed on it.
- Cut a couple of strips of fabric the same length and a couple of inches thick. You may want to adjust the size of this depending on the size of your dog.
- Knot the fabric strips together at one end.
- Tightly braid the strips together.
- Tie it off at the end. Trim any excess fabric if necessary.
- Play with your pup!
Depending on the size of the toy and the tightness of the braid, you may even be able to tuck some of your dog’s favorite treats or kibble into the toy and let them work to get it out.
