Canned biscuit donuts

Use your favorite tube biscuits from the refrigerated section at the grocery store.

Remove the biscuits from the packaging and separate them on the surface of your choice. If you have trouble opening the tube, remove the wrapping as instructed and give one end a firm yet gentle tap on a cutting board or other solid surface. It should pop right open!

Using a small biscuit cutter, small bottle cap or something similar to cut a hole in the center of the biscuit. Set that small bit of dough aside, they make perfect doughnut holes! If you don’t have a tool to cut out the center, use your hands. Gently poke a hole in the center with your fingers and shape it to look like a doughnut. The hole is important to help the dough fry quickly and evenly.

You can fry the biscuit doughnuts in a countertop fryer, if you have one, a skillet or a deeper pot with a couple of inches of oil. Keep a thermometer on hand to make sure the oil doesn’t get too hot.

To make biscuit doughnuts:

  1. Heat vegetable oil or the oil of your choice to 350ºF.
  2. Gently put the doughnuts in the oil and fry for 1-2 minutes on each side. You want the donut to be evenly browned.
  3. Remove and set on a wire rack to drain and cool.

You can also fry the doughnut holes. Keep an eye on them because they will cook very quickly.

Glazed donut

Doughnuts in all forms are delicious, so consider making a glaze or cinnamon sugar topping to sweeten them a little more.

To make a glaze, combine:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar.
  • 4-5 tbsp. of milk or a non-dairy alternative.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract.
  • Pinch of salt.

You can also make it maple by adding in a dash of maple syrup instead of the vanilla extract or as a substitute for some of the milk.

If the glaze is too thick, add more milk. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar.

Dip the doughnuts in the glaze after they have cooled slightly. You can dip the whole thing or just the top. If you’re not eating them immediately, set the doughnuts on the wire rack with a tray or paper towels underneath to catch any drippage.

For a cinnamon sugar topping, mix:

  • 1 cup sugar.
  • 1-2 tbsp of cinnamon.
  • Mix to combine.

This is to taste, so add as much or as little cinnamon as you like. Toss the slightly cooled doughnut in the sugar mixture and enjoy!
