Pumpkin season might be months away, but if you want to grow your own pumpkins, the time to start is now!

Head to your local nursery and pick up some pumpkin seeds. If you’re unsure which variety to go for or which ones will work in your space, ask an expert at your local nursery. You can also do a web search for successful tips on growing the right pumpkin species in your area or seek out advice from fellow gardeners on platforms like Facebook or Reddit.

Plant:

  • Jack-o’-lantern seeds if carving is your goal
  • Colorful varieties if you want to use them for decorating.
  • Tiny pumpkins if you're a beginner.
  • Sugar pie pumpkins to use in roasting and eating.

The seed packet is a wealth of information on your prospective new plant, so don’t toss it once it’s empty. On it, you can find details about when to plant based on where you live, sun and water requirements and how long the seeds take to grow.

How to grow your own pumpkins in time for the fall.

Starting pumpkin seeds indoors

Pumpkins like warm temperatures, so plant them in spring to early summer. One seed produces one pumpkin, and it can take 100-120 days to harvest depending on the variety, so plant accordingly. More specific information can be found on the seed packet.

If you don’t have garden space, pumpkins can also grow in containers. Just make sure you have good soil, fertilizer and compost. Start by planting the seeds in a small container; alternatively, use an old egg carton. Once the seeds sprout, transfer the plant to a larger pot or your garden.

A pumpkin needs a lot of sunlight and water. When watering, soak the soil around it and avoid watering the leaves.

Can you plant pumpkin seeds straight from a pumpkin?

Yes, you can plant seeds from a pumpkin. First, clean off any pulp and let them air dry on a paper towel before planting or storing until you’re ready to plant. To ensure the most success, check with the experts at your local gardening center or do some online research to see what kind of growing conditions the seeds need to grow.

How to harvest a pumpkin

In a couple of months, it’ll be time to enjoy the fruits of your labor! As the pumpkins grow, you want to remove the leaves that are shading them, since they like a lot of direct sunlight.

You’ll know the pumpkin is ready to harvest when the outside has a nice, bright color, the rind is hard and the stem begins to shrivel.

According to Lowe's, the best way to harvest a pumpkin is:

  1. Cut the stems off the vine with a sharp knife.
  2. Place the pumpkin in the sun for 10-14 days after cutting the stem to let it harden and finish ripening.
  3. Store it in a cold, dark place until it’s ready to be carved or eaten.
