Nielsen ratings: NFL season opens, 'Boardwalk' is back

NFL nirvana. Thursday was like Christmas for football fans (and NBC executives), as 26.9 million viewers tuned into the early kickoff of Sunday Night Football, which beat last year's opening game (25.1 million). Sunday's game drew 23.7 million, down from last year's 25.4 million.

Hello, goodbye. The final-season opener of HBO's Boardwalk Empire (2.2 million viewers Sunday) was up slightly from last fall's premiere, and was followed by the first-season finale of The Leftovers, which held steady with 1.5 million.

Fox's reality. Even with a Sunday football lead-in, just 4.6 million viewers were ready to move to Utopia, the network's new "build a society" reality series. Wednesday's 11th season finale of So You Think You Can Dance didn't set any toes twinkling with 4.1 million, down from last year's 4.4 million.
