'SNL' picks new 'Weekend Update' team

Saturday Night Live is switching up its Weekend Update anchor team — again.

Comedian Michael Che, a former SNL writer who's now a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, will join Colin Jost at the news desk, replacing Cecily Strong, when the show begins its 40th season Sept. 27.

Strong has anchored for since 2013, first with Seth Meyers and since with Colin Jost. Both were head writers on the show, a recent tradition. She will remain a regular cast member performing other sketches and characters, including "The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With At a Party."

Che, a black comedian, ups the diversity quotient at the show, which has been criticized for its low number of minority performers; Sasheer Zamata was added to the cast midway through last season, the first black woman in the cast since Maya Rudolph left in 2007.
