The Millers
CBS, 8:30 ET/PT

Last season, CBS squandered the talents of one of TV's best trios — Will Arnett, Margo Martindale and Beau Bridges — in this fleetingly amusing show that too often seemed to think loud and crazy equaled funny. Tonight, the show ups that talent ante by adding Sean Hayes, which is great — but not if the goal is simply to become louder and crazier. Hayes, Martindale and Bridges all have Emmys, and all have the ability to create rich, full-bodied characters that go beyond one-joke traits. It's time The Millers proved it was worthy of their talents.

Jane the Virgin
CW, 9 ET/PT

Jane has something to prove as well: That its excellent pilot wasn't a fluke. Happily, the show makes its case tonight with a second outing that rockets the plot forward without losing sight of the emotional links that hold this comic soap together. Fun twists abound, including one for Jane's mother (Andrea Navedo) that amuses and enlightens simultaneously. Best of all, the episode reconfirms Gina Rodriguez's status as an incredibly bright new star, one who seems capable of handling anything Jane throws at her. And tonight, that's a lot.

American Dad
TBS, 9 ET/PT

If you've missed this former Fox cartoon, it begins a run of new episodes on TBS. And if you've enjoyed missing it, now you know where not to go.
