American Country Countdown Awards
Fox, 8 ET/PT

Well, here's something TV desperately needs: Another country music awards show. This one awards its prizes based on radio airplay and album sales — because apparently the rewards that come with airplay and sales are not enough. But never mind. If you think of these shows less as awards broadcasts and more as music specials with a few prizes thrown in, they're much easier to take. Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard host; Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, Brett Eldredge, and, yes, Carrie Underwood are set to perform.

Jane the Virgin
CW, 9 ET/PT

Speaking of awards, broadcast's best new series goes off for its holiday break with an outing that finds Jane, Alba and Xo attending a TV awards show with Rogelio, who is up for Best Actor. Let's hope it's a harbinger of Emmys to come for Jane and its cast.

Journey to Planet Earth: Extreme Realities: Severe Weather, Climate Change and Our National Security
PBS, 10 ET/PT

Matt Damon narrates this special, which travels to the Arctic, Afghanistan, Africa and points inbetween to examine the damage being done by extreme weather events and the threat they may pose to our national security. The show also looks at innovations that may help us survive what it's calling our "new normal." And Happy Holidays to you!
