'Downton Abbey' finale: A decent proposal
Of course everyone in England already knows this big news.
But — spoiler alert! — Downton Abbey wrapped its fifth season on Sunday night stateside, and we're happy to report about one particularly sweet moment.
Mrs. Hughes and Carson are engaged!
It played out over the Christmas-themed finale with Carson at first wanting Mrs. Hughes to buy a house with him. "Here's to us as property magnates," he said, toasting her.
But she put the brakes on that, revealing that she has a sister, Becky, who was born "not quite right in the head" and helping out that sister since her mother's death took all of her money.
"I've got no savings because I've got no money. I'm a pauper," says Mrs. Hughes. "I can't retire. I must work for as long as anyone will let me."
She told him, "There is no place for me in the project."
But a crushed Carson wasn't going to stop there.
Cut to a later scene and Carson is telling Mrs. Hughes he "registered" the house in both their names. "I hate to change a plan when there's no need."
She replies, "You don't want to be stuck with me."
Ah, but the butler does!
Carson: "I do want to be stuck with you."
Mrs. Hughes: "Am I hearing this right?"
Carson: "You are if you think I'm asking you to marry me."
A shocked Mrs. Hughes replies, "Well, knock me down with a feather!"
Then, in true Carson fashion, he says, "You're not offended?"
Mrs. Hughes mustering up a smile: "Mr. Carson, I can assure you the very last thing I am at this moment is offended."
And finally, she says, "Of course I'll marry you, you old booby. I thought you'd never ask!"
There's no kissing.
No syrupy "I love you's" are exchanged.
No ring emerges from Carson's pocket. He never got down on one knee.
But she called him an old "booby," so it's clear they're meant for each other!
