Jon Stewart (jokingly) defends Trevor Noah

Let's recap: Everyone got really excited when little-known South African comedian Trevor Noah was announced as Jon Stewart's replacement on The Daily Show.

Then a Twitter backlash erupted over some old, bad, anti-Semitic jokes that Noah had posted on Twitter.

Noah and Comedy Central asked everyone not to judge him on those.

And now Stewart is asking the same thing. On his show Monday night, Stewart said:

"I know there was a large kerfluffle, but I can say this without hesitation. Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect ... or not. Just as I earned your trust and respect ... or did not."
