Ex-'Top Gear' hosts embark on 'The Grand Tour'
The former Top Gear trio — Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May — finally have a name for their new Amazon show, due this fall.
And it was apparently staring them in the face all this time. (They've been working on the new show since the middle of last year.)
The winner (drumroll, please): The Grand Tour.
The Grand Tour reference to grand tourers, the class of high-performance, luxury cars with enough room for two people and their luggage that can be comfortably used for long-distance driving or weekend getaways without making the driver miserable by the time he or she reaches their destination. It derives from the Italian term gran turismo. (Now you know where the GT in certain car names comes from, as well as the popular video game.)
Anyone who's ever seen a season of Top Gear knows how much the hosts love GT cars (the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-Benz SLS, for example) and searching out the world's greatest driving roads, so the name makes total sense.
It also fits in with the nomadic theme of the new show, which will be based out of a tent in a new location every week.
Though it seems co-host James May does not appear to be completely sold on the new title yet, who dissented in the most British way possible before figuring out that it's an anagram for "Hot Grunt, Dear."'
Here's a crash-course in grand touring with Clarkson, Hammond in May.
Meanwhile, their old show returns to BBC America with new hosts Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc on May 30.
