Tyler Hoechlin cast as Superman on 'Supergirl'

Supergirl’s picked a Guest Star of Steel.

Tyler Hoechlin, who appeared on MTVs Teen Wolf and recently starred in Richard Linklater’s comedy Everybody Wants Some!!, has been cast as the iconic hero Superman — and his mild-mannered alter ego Clark Kent — on the TV series, which moves from CBS to The CW in the fall.

The character’s texted with his cousin Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) several times already on the show but will be seen visiting Supergirl in National City for the first two episodes of the second season.

In a statement, Andrew Kreisberg said that he and fellow executive producer Greg Berlanti “have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character."

While Henry Cavill is the current Man of Steel in the movies, Hoechlin, 28, is the latest actor to take on the DC Comics legend on the small screen: George Reeves starred in the 1950s Adventure of Superman show, Dean Cain (who plays Kara’s adoptive father in Supergirl) wore the signature “S” shield on the 1990s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Tom Welling explored the younger years of the character in the 2000s with Smallville.

A former college baseball player at Arizona State and University of California, Irvine, Hoechlin was a child actor who played Tom Hanks’ son in Road to Perdition and starred on 7th Heaven, and he has roles in the upcoming movies Stratton: First Into Action and Fifty Shades Darker.
