TV tonight: Summer Olympics, 'New Girl'

Summer Olympics
NBCSN, 8 ET/PT

If you’re looking for the big events — live swimming finals, women’s gymnastics, women’s diving — you’ll find them on the NBC mothership. But one of the nice things, at least for fans of less-popular sports, about NBC Universal’s Olympic coverage is that the company is spreading the wealth among its multiple cable outlets and its Olympic website. So, for example, if you want to sample judo, weightlifting and table tennis, you can turn to NBCSN. In doing so, you’ll not only see sports that NBC seldom airs, you’ll see athletes from a wider range of countries than you’d normally find on NBC’s signature broadcast, which tends to focus tightly on Americans. All in all, there’s pretty much something for everyone, much of it live, which is what people have said they’ve wanted.

New Girl
Fox, 8:30 ET/PT

If, instead, what you want is some scripted comedy, New Girl complies with this very funny repeat. Jess has buying a car handled — at least until Sam (guest star David Walton) and Nick come to her “rescue” and mess up her plan.

Animal Kingdom
TNT, 9 ET/PT

Most of TNT’s dramas are in repeats this week, as the network tries to avoid Olympics ratings competition. But not Animal Kingdom, which airs its first-season finale.
