TV tonight: 'Rio' movie, Triumph's election special
Triumph’s Summer Election Special
Hulu
If ever there were an election year that was perfect for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, it’s this one. Luckily, Hulu and Triumph’s bitingly funny puppeteer Robert Smigel agree. So we get this special, which sends Triumph to the Republican and Democratic conventions, where he mocks both the participants and the media horde covering them. Whether Triumph can be as nasty (or provoke as many laughs) as some of the speakers is open to question.
Rio
Nick at Nite, 8 ET/PT
Have the Summer Olympics (NBC, 8 ET/PT) piqued your interest in Rio de Janeiro? If so, and you want to celebrate the city without sitting through the games, Nick at Nite offers this cartoon starring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway as two macaws who fall in love and battle animal smugglers in this glorious city. If you want a companion piece, rent Flying Down to Rio, That Night in Rio, or, for the visuals alone, Moonraker — a terrible movie, but one with some wonderful Rio footage.
American Greed: The Phantom Fraudster of Broadway
CNBC, 10 ET/PT
You have to admit: When it comes to intriguing titles, that’s a pretty catchy one. The show follows the case of stockbroker Mark Hotton, who allegedly used the musical Rebecca to launder money, conning the producers and dooming the show in the process.
