Fox gives 'Lethal Weapon' a full-season pickup
To update the famous line from the original Lethal Weapon, Roger Murtaugh isn't too old for this (expletive) after all.
Fox has ordered a full season of the TV reboot based on the bickering-buddy-cop franchise, in which Damon Wayans' Murtaugh (originally played by Danny Glover), a grizzled veteran cop who just wants to make it to his pension in one piece. He's none too happy about being partnered with Martin Riggs, a new transfer who's suicidal after the loss of his wife (with Clayne Crawford taking over the Mel Gibson role).
The network had already purchased 13 episodes and ordered five more to bring Season 1 to 18 episodes.
Fox entertainment boss David Madden praised the freshman series in a statement, saying “(producers) Matt Miller, McG, Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz have done a tremendous job on this show, which has proven to be a self-starter and solid companion for Empire. We are thrilled to add these episodes to Lethal Weapon's first season.”
The news comes on the same day its fourth episode is set to air (Wednesday, 8 ET/PT).
Lethal Weapon was Fox's highest fall debut in two years and has averaged 9.6 million viewers in its first three outings.
"It was the chemistry between Gibson and Glover that made the series work," Paste BN film critic Robert Bianco wrote in his review. "And chemistry — this time between Wayans and Rectify’s less well-known Crawford — is exactly what turns this latest Weapon into the best of the season’s multiple reboots."
