Colbert confirms live Showtime election special
Stephen Colbert will be going live — and unfiltered — on election night.
Confirming plans first teased in August, Showtime announced Stephen Colbert';s Live Election Night Democracy's Series Finale: Who's Going to Clean Up This S---?, an hour-long special airing Nov. 8 at 11 ET/PT.
"It'll be all the political comedy you love from my CBS show, with all the swearing and nudity you love from Showtime," Colbert joked in a statement. (Showtime is owned by CBS Corp., which will pre-empt Colbert's Late Show that night for election coverage).
Colbert has already gone live following debates and conventions, along with other late-night hosts such as Seth Meyers and Trevor Noah who are looking to mine comedy from that night's events. The new special, airing from his customary home at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York, will include a studio audience, remote segments and "several surprise guests." Plus it will allow the host to "do things he's never been able to do in this campaign, such as directly quote a candidate without being bleeped," Showtime says.
"He can take what he's doing on the CBS show, but bring it here, and do it unfettered," said Showtime chief David Nevins in August, adding "he promised he would say a couple of curse words ... It will be interesting to see what Colbert does with no commercial breaks, no language restrictions. He's kind of excited about it; he's never done that before."
