Starz's 'Outlander' sets September return

The end of "Droughtlander" is in sight.

Starz announced Wednesday that its time-traveling romantic drama Outlander will return for a third season in September.

And viewers will get to see some different scenery, too. Next month, filming — which began last fall — will shift from Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa. The move will allow the show to shoot sea-voyage footage on the sets left behind by another Starz series, Black Sails, which has already wrapped production on its fourth and final season.

Given that Scotland is an unofficial Outlander character in the same way New York City was for Sex and the City, stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan felt obligated to say a proper goodbye.

After running down a list of South African things ("Biltong!" "Springbok!") in his thick Scottish accent, Heughan added, "There's sunshine, apparently. We don't know what that is."

"We might get to ditch a few of these layers," Balffe said wistfully, pointing at her thick wool cape.

Starz promises that the Season 3 premiere will pick up where the show left off — with a pregnant Claire (Balfe) making a return trip back through the stones to 1948 and Jamie (Heughan) coping as the lone survivor of the Battle of Culloden and adjusting to life without her. At least until their inevitable reunion, when they'll have to adjust to the knowledge that they're not the same people they were when they last saw each other.

"We feel it is important to allow the production the time and number of episodes needed to tell the story of the Voyager book in its entirety," explained Carmi Zlotnik, Starz' president of programming, in a statement. "The scale of this book is immense, and we owe the fans the very best show. Returning in September will make that possible.”
