Marvel brings Squirrel Girl to TV in 'New Warriors' series on Freeform

Marvel Television is getting a bit squirrely.

Freeform announced Wednesday that they have given a straight-to-series order for Marvel's New Warriors, a live-action adaptation of the comic series about young adult heroes, including the very popular Squirrel Girl/Doreen Green. But unlike other existing Marvel TV shows, New Warriors will be a half-hour comedy.

The comics follow six teen heroes who are balancing attempted heroics with growing up. Though Freeform has not revealed which specific six characters will be on the roster, Squirrel Girl will definitely be there. The character — who has the powers of a squirrel including acrobatics, flying and conversing with the furry creatures — has become a fan-favorite in recent years due to her fan-girl aesthetic and the humor in her comic.

New Warriors is Freeform's second partnership with Marvel. The network is also producing Cloak and Dagger, a romance following the titular pair of teen superheroes, which received a straight-to-series order last year but has not yet premiered on the network.

Marvel's New Warriors is set to debut in 2018 with a 10-episode season.
