Who in the world is voicing new 'Carmen Sandiego?'
Carmen Sandiego, who became a household name in the 1990s as the titular character of a PBS children's game show, will return in 2019 in a new Netflix animated series, Carmen Sandiego,
Netflix announced Tuesday that it is ordering 20 episodes, each running 22 minutes.
Gina Rodriguez, star of Jane the Virgin, will provide the voice of Carmen, while Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard will portray Player, Carmen's chief accomplice and friend.
The series, to be produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, features Carmen "back and ready for a new crop of international capers packed with thrilling adventure and intrigue," according to a description accompanying Netflix's Monday announcement.
The new series promises more answers about the mysterious lead character, the description says. "This fresh take presents an intimate look into Carmen's past where viewers will not only follow her escapades but also learn who in the world is Carmen Sandiego and why she became a super thief."
The original Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, based on a computer-game series, ran on PBS from 1991 to 1995. Greg Lee hosted the program, which featured students answering geography questions as part of a search for Carmen's henchmen. Lynne Thigpen also starred.
