'MacGyver' stunt coordinator out of ICU after serious injury
“MacGyver” stunt coordinator Justin Sundquist is out of intensive care after sustaining a serious injury last week.
A spokesperson for CBS confirmed to Paste BN that Sundquist is out of the ICU. The news comes after he was seriously injured on the Atlanta set of the CBS action drama last Monday.
A source with knowledge of the situation but not authorized to speak said Sundquist suffered a serious head injury while performing a stunt. He was placed in a medically induced coma, according to the Hollywood Reporter and Deadline.
“The production team is cooperating with the authorities investigating the accident, and our primary concern at this time is Justin’s health and well-being,” CBS Television Studios told Paste BN in a statement last week.
The accident comes a year after Sundquist sued CBS Corp. and CBS TV Studios after he said he was hurt on the set of “Hawaii Five-0” in July 2016.
Sundquist was “was struck by a moving car” while filming a scene doubling as a stunt performer for Alex O’Loughlin’s character, Steve McGarrett, according to the 2017 lawsuit. He claimed his injury was the result of a “series of reckless, negligent mishaps” including a rushed set, lack of safety meetings and a key safety worker who was “under the influence of narcotic controlled substances.”
The award-winning stunt performer has an extensive resume. Sundquist has doubled for Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes character in Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Solider” and “Captain America: Civil War."
He also performed stunt work in “The Fate of the Furious,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Monster Trucks” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.”
“MacGyver” films in Georgia, the same state where stuntman John Bernecker died after suffering injuries on the set of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” last year.
