Weekend TV: Don't miss the joyous second season of 'One Day at a Time'
One Day at a Time
Netflix, Friday
The reboot of the classic Norman Lear series returns for its second season, and builds on its smart first. New episodes tackle social issues such as immigration and racism with the same sensitivity and verve, and craft even more intimate and moving stories about the Alvarez family. With exceptional performances from the legendary Rita Moreno (as matriarch Lydia) and Justina Machado (as outgoing single-mom Penelope), every episode is an absolute joy. The fifth is a particular standout, in which the family is trapped in the apartment along with potential love interests for Penelope, Lydia and Elena (Isabella Gomez).

The crime drama took three episodes to set up its vivid world and establish its large cast of characters. But in tonight's harrowing and moving episode, things speed up considerably. The episode, which shows its events out of chronological order, finds several of the disparate characters coming together in a violent confrontation.
