Volkswagen shows off 2016 Jetta GLI sedan

One new standard feature is a system that triggers automatic braking after a collision.

German automaker Volkswagen revealed the 2016 Jetta GLI sedan on Wednesday, a new hot, sedan that's coming to the U.S.

The vehicle is the sedan version of the company's Golf GTI hatchback. The 2016 Jetta GLI comes with a 2-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that develops 210 horsepower.

A honeycomb grille, foglights and a new rear bumper design are designed to give the Jetta GLI a fresh look. The vehicle gets Volkswagen's MIB 2 infotainment system.

Options will include LED taillights, keyless access, sunroof, rain-sensing wipers.

One new standard feature is a system that triggers automatic braking when a collision occurs. VW says braking after the initial contact can help reduce damage.

"This builds on the premise that a collision is rarely a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of events that follow the initial impact — the most significant of which can cause additional collisions," Volkswagen said in a statement. The system "addresses this by applying the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus helping reduce residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage."
