Ronda Rousey, Taylor Swift make Fortune's '40 Under 40' list
You may not recognize a lot of the names on Fortune's latest "40 Under 40" list, out Thursday, but a few will surely stand out.
Because, of course, Taylor Swift made the cut on the magazine's annual crowning of the biggest, youngest stars of American business.
2015 has been Swift's year, one in which she's not only proven herself to be one of the biggest powerhouses in the entertainment industry, but a significant influencer in the business world too.
Over the summer, Swift, 25, famously got Apple to reverse its stance on not paying artists for music streams during users' free trial period of Apple Music after writing an open letter to the company on Tumblr. And last year, she pulled all of her music from the streaming service Spotify. Earlier in the year, she had landed an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal in which she blasted the business model of streaming services for undervaluing artists.
Other notable entertainers turned business stars on the list include Jessica Alba, the 34 year-old actress and founder of The Honest Company, and 28 year-old UFC mixed martial arts fighter Ronda Rousey, who made appearances in three major movies this year and has earned $5 million fighting in 2015, according to Fortune.
As for Alba, she has turned The Honest Company into one of the biggest names in sustainable products for beauty and home — last year the company had $170 million in sales, according to Fortune. Although the company recently drew negative publicity when customers started calling out the sunscreen for not providing enough protection and leaving them significantly burned.
"Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver, 38, also made the list. The rest of the "40 Under 40" list includes some of the top brass at the biggest start-ups turned industry game-changers: the co-founders of Lyft, the CEO of Fitbit, a senior vice president at Uber, CEO of grocery delivery service Instacart and CEO of group fitness craze SoulCycle.
