Lowe's and Home Depot go on a hiring spree

Lowe's and Home Depot are tapping into the tried and true  - as well as new technology - to fill tens of thousands of  temporary jobs as they gear up for their prime shopping seasons. 

Lowe’s will host its largest ever job fair on Feb. 21 to find more than 53,000 employees to sell lawn and garden equipment, work as cashiers and stock items along with other tasks during the busy spring and summer seasons.

Meanwhile, the Home Depot has more than 80,000 seasonal slots to fill for the spring, and is rolling out a new platform to enable job seekers to schedule interviews through their smartphones, laptops or tablets.

Those who have filled out an application in person -- at a store or Home Depot distribution center -- -will be able to set up a time for the follow-up interview appointment online.

“Just as we’re continuously evolving to meet the changing expectations of our customers, we’re harnessing new technologies to do the same for job seekers,’’ Tim Hourigan, Home Depot’s executive vice president for human resources said in a statement.

Lowe's touts that almost 40% of its seasonal workers move into permanent part-time and full time jobs in 2017.
