Uber to prom? Company offers free rides for teens for milestone event. How to get one.

For teenagers who haven't gotten their driver's licenses or don't have the budget to rent a limousine, Uber may have a solution.
The company is offering free rides to prom and back home for up to $20 starting on Tuesday, April 28, as the formal high school dances kick into high gear. Uber said the deal will make it easier for teens and their parents to safely navigate transportation to the milestone event.
The deal will allow teens to reserve two free rides up to 90 days in advance for their round trip to their prom-related event, according to Uber. Those arriving in a group of six or less have the option to reserve an UberXL.
Rides need to be booked by May 31, though the rides can take place after that date. The offer is not available in California, Uber said.
After the dance, users can also get $20 off an Uber Eats order for post-prom snacks, the company said.
"With Uber teen accounts, we’re giving teens the freedom to celebrate their big night on their own terms, while giving parents peace of mind," Georgie Jeffreys, Uber North America's head of marketing, said in a news release.
How to get free Uber prom ride
Teenagers looking for a nearby ride to prom can book two free rides of up to $20 − one for the ride there and another for the ride back − through an Uber teen account. (Far rides would not be free, though Uber didn't specify what is considered far.)
Uber teen accounts launched in May 2023 and have since given parents access to live safety features like PIN verification, a RideCheck monitor and real-time updates.
Teens ages 13 to 17 can be added to a parent's Uber account, allowing teenagers to request rides and order meals under parent supervision. This option allows parents access to parental features and exclusive promotions, according to Uber.
