United Airlines posts record Q3 profit
United Airlines earned $924 million in the third quarter, more than double its profit in the same period a year ago, the airline said Thursday.
Revenue rose 3.3% and operating expenses fell 3.6% in the quarter, driving earnings far above last year's third-quarter profit of $379 million. Earnings per share were $2.37 compared with 98 cents per share in the 2013 period.
Not counting special items, United (UAL) saw its most profitable quarter in history, earning $1.1 billion or $2.75 per share.
Passenger revenue was up 3.9% in the July-September quarter as compared to that period last year. And the revenue from the extra fees United tacks on for various perks and services, such as checked baggage and extra leg room, rose to more than $22 per passenger, a 10.9% increase over the third quarter last year.
