Chevrolet's small Trax SUV starts under $21,000

Chevrolet has put a price to its newest, smallest SUV, the Trax.

Trax, which is sold around the world but not the U.S. until now, will start at $20,995. The crossover SUV comes to dealers in January.

Chevrolet says Trax will also post strong gas mileage figures. It is expected to be rated at 26 miles per gallon and 34 mpg on the highway.

"Trax is positioned to be a strong competitor in the emerging small-SUV market, which is expected to grow more than 80% in the next few years," said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet director of car marketing, in a statement.

Chevrolet's emphasis is on all the features that will be built into the Trax, which is sold already in 66 foreign markets. It will come with 10 airbags, MyLink infotainment with a seven-inch touch screen, rearview camera, remote keyless entry and a 60/40-split fold-flat rear seat and fold-down front passenger seat offering more than 48 cubic feet of cargo space.

Trax is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine.
