Volvo to field 100 self-driving cars
Volvo says it has come up with a system to integrate self-driving cars into traffic and plans to field a fleet of 100 of them to further perfect the technology.
The cars will be deployed around Volvo's home of Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo Car Group says. People will sit behind the wheel as the car drives itself.
"Autonomous driving will fundamentally change the way we look at driving. In the future, you will be able to choose between autonomous and active driving," says Peter Mertens, senior vice president of research and development, in a statement. "This transforms everyday commuting from lost time to quality time, opening up new opportunities for work and pleasure."
Volvo says the autopilot system will depend on a network of sensors, cloud-based positioning systems and computer-operated braking and steering technologies.
For the real-world test, Volvo says there will be backup systems that allow it to keep working even if another part of the system fails.
