Mercedes-Benz goes offroad with tough new G500 SUV

Mercedes-Benz has created what may be the world's toughest SUV -- its new G500 four-wheel drive vehicle.

How? By taking its Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG six-wheel SUV, and knocking off one of the three axles. Throw in a 422-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, 22-inch wheels and carbon-fiber parts and you have the G500 that Mercedes plans to show off at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The are side exhaust pipes that look and sound cool, and also are practical: They replace pipes in the rear that could get in the way when a truck goes uphill at a sharp angle in rough terrain.

Mercedes the G 500 isn't just at home on rock or sand, but on the road as well.
