LOS ANGELES -- He bought a vintage yet cool little sports car pretty much unseen, but he ended up with a rare classic.

Ron Stauber of Los Angeles, and his son Daniel, love to show off their 1933 Singer 9. Ron says he believes it's one of only three in the U.S.

The senior Stauber had barely set sights on the car when he ended up owning it. He says he caught a glance of it at an auction in Rancho Mirage, Calif., in 2002. A moment later, before he really had a chance to think it through, the gavel banged. "I had no clue whatsoever" about the magic of the car he had just bought, he says.

In unrestored condition, it wasn't a great surprise that there wasn't more vigorous bidding for the two-seat sports car despite the brand's history at the 24 hours of Le Mans. "It was a basket case," he adds.

Not anymore. The Singer has been fully restored. The Staubers happily shows it off at car shows. Daniel is the designated crew chief.

"It's really fun and I get to go to all the car shows with my dad," says the sixth grader.
