LOS ANGELES — One of the most daring reveals this week at the L.A. auto show is the Land Rover's Evoque convertible -- the topless SUV.

The 2017 Evoque compact premium convertible took its first global bow Wednesday, filling a segment in the auto world that does not exist.

Nissan took a shot already with the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, but it did not sell well and was discontinued last year.

"When the Range Rover Evoque Convertible was first shown as a concept, the response was overwhelmingly positive," said Gerry McGovern, head of design for Land Rover, referring to the concept shown at the 2012 Geneva auto show. "It was the next logical step to bring the pioneering concept to reality."

Land Rover officials figure, hey, it's fun.

The Range Rover Evoque convertible will be on sale in the U.S. beginning in mid-2016, priced from $51,470 including destination charges.
