Topless in L.A.? These three cars take you there

LOS ANGELES -- Fun on four wheels -- and no top.
That what defines these three cars at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Each is a new version of a familiar names.
And it's no coincidence that they're being shown in L.A., where a convertible has long been a status symbol. Yet each of the three goes after a unique niche of the top-down motoring public.
Mercedes SL, for instance, is the car of moguls and Hollywood agents. It's a success, as well as sex, symbol.
The new Fiat 124 aims for youth, romance and nostalgia. It's a throwback to a1960s model of the same name that was known for its beautiful looks and trouble-plagued mechanics. This time, it shares its underpinning with Mazda MX-5 Miata, which should take some of the worry out of ownership.
The Porsche 911 Targa is another 1960s warhorse, attractive to those who like driving in the open air without a lot of the buffeting and wind noise of a traditional convertible. Plus, it looks great and that big roll bar is a nice safety feature.
All are on display at the auto show through Nov. 29.
