HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. -- For 40 years, Dave Wertz has kept an unloved car tucked away in his garage.

"I've never loved T-Birds," admits Wertz, of Los Alamitos, Calif. Chevrolet Corvettes, now that's another matter. Wertz says he loves those because they strike him as more masculine.

But it's a gleaming sage-green 1956 Ford Thunderbird that he has owned for four decades and refuses to abandon. For car he says he doesn't love, he sure keeps it in first-class shape. In fact, he plans to pass the car on to relatives eventually.

Wertz says he gets plenty of use out of his 'bird. "It is not a trailer queen," he says. "It's a driver."

He will drive the car he loves to not love as long as he can.
