Owners of big GM SUVs complain of vibration, wind noise

Some owners of General Motors' full-size SUVs are complaining of vibration and unexplainable wind buffeting even when the windows are rolled up.

"Vehicle has terrible vibration," states one complaint from the owner of 2015 GMC Yukon posted on the Federal Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. "Has been to the dealer 7 times for a total of 4 weeks."

The problem apparently extends to all of GM's full-size SUVs -- not only the Yukon, but Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and Cadillac Escalade. Web site AutoGuide.com says the complaints aren't limited to the NHTSA website, but being seen on owner forums as well.

GM is aware of the problem and has been coaching dealers on how to attack it.

"We are aware of vibration and drumming issues with some of the new generation SUVs." said spokesman Tom Wilkinson, when reached for comment. "Dealers have an diagnostic procedure to isolate the cause, which can vary, and fix the vehicle under warranty."

The issues centers on wind noise and vibration. "Vehicle is creating a buffeting, pressure sound and sensation at low- to mid-range speeds," writes the owner of a 2015 Suburban on the NHTSA complaint site. "Creating headache, dizziness and strain."

GM dealers are trying various solutions, but so far, there's no silver bullet. Poorly attached roof sheet metal could be one cause, AutoGuide, com found, based on GM service bulletins.
