BMW has issued a recall for more than 40,000 vehicles over a side door lock malfunction.

The car manufacturer issued a recall Thursday for X3 vehicles in multiple model years over concerns that the "second-row seat side door locking modules may not function properly" and could cause the doors to become unlocked, according to a recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website this week. The total number of cars potentially affected is 40,736.

Doors opening unexpectedly could increase the risk of injury to passengers sitting in the rear seats, the recall notice stated.

The defect was noted during an internal vehicle testing on Jan. 30, after which an engineering review was initiated, BMW said in the safety recall report. After a thorough review, it was determined the vehicles failed to comply with federal safety provisions and BMW issued a voluntary recall.

BMW added the company did not receive reports of any accidents or injuries and is not "aware of any warranty claims, customer complaints, or field reports" related to the issue.

Which BMW cars are included in the recall?

Recalled cars include certain BMW X3 sDrive30i and X3 xDrive30i in model years 2022-2024. The vehicles were manufactured between August 2021 and August 2024.

What to do if you have a recalled car

BMW said the second-row seat side door locking modules will be replaced free of charge.

While owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on April 14, owners can contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417 for more information and further instructions.
