Animal cookies sold at Target nationwide are being recalled because they may contain pieces of metal.

D. F. Stauffer Biscuit Company is voluntarily recalling the 44-ounce Market Pantry White Fudge Animal Cookies, the company announced with the Food and Drug Administration on Aug. 24. The product comes in a bear-shaped plastic jug and the cookies are white frosted with sprinkles.

The company said the recall was initiated after a metal wire was found inside a cookie.

"Foodborne foreign objects that are hard, sharp, and large are more likely to cause serious injury or dental injury. Foodborne foreign objects that are flexible, not sharp, and smaller in length are more likely to cause minor injuries such as transient choking or small lacerations in the gastrointestinal system," the company said in the statement.

People who purchased the recalled products are advised to stop consuming it and return it to the purchase location for a full refund. People with questions or concerns can contact D. F. Stauffer Biscuit Company at 888-480-1988 or fill out an online complaint here
