More than 140k pounds of bologna products recalled due to mislabeling
Ready-to-eat lunch meat products are being recalled due to mislabeling concerns, according to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
An estimated 143,416 pounds of the bologna items were impacted by the recall announced on June 27. It was initiated by Union, New Jersey based wholesaler, Gaiser's European Style Provisions Inc.
The products, produced between March 20 and June 20, "contain meat or poultry source material that are not declared on the products labels," according to the agency.
The Office of Inspector General alerted the agency about a complaint, prompting the FSIS to launch an investigation.
Which products were recalled?
The FSIS said that the products, marked with EST. 5385, were administered to retail and wholesale establishments across the country. The impacted items are listed below:
- Chicken Bologna Kypoyka Paba: Undeclared pork
- Gaisers Bologna Veal: Undeclared chicken and pork
- Gaisers Turkey Bologna: Undeclared chicken and pork
- Fancy Bologna: labeled as pork, contained undeclared beef and chicken
- Gaisers Russian Brand Doktorskaya Bologna: Undeclared beef
- Family Tree Bologna Veal: Undeclared pork
- Babushka's Recipe Chicken Bologna: Undeclared pork
What should consumers do?
The FSIS warns consumers and restaurants to discard the product or return to establishment where it was purchased.
They are also urging people to not consume the products. No health effects have been reported however, consumers should reach out to a healthcare professional in light of any concerns.
