North Carolina woman will retire, pay off her home after winning $1 million lottery prize

A North Carolina woman's retirement plans were solidified after she won a $1 million lottery prize.

Veronica Cunningham longed to stop working this year, and her winnings helped make her dream come true, according to the NC Education Lottery. The prize will also help the Charlotte resident pay off her home.

“It still hasn’t set in yet that this is real,” Cunningham told state lottery officials.

NC Education Lottery informed Cunningham she had won via the $10 Million Spectacular Second Chance drawing. According to officials, participants can enter the second chance game by scanning their scratch-offs to their accounts.

Cunningham had done this for years before she won.

'It's just wild'

According to the NC Education Lottery, Cunningham opted for the $600,000 lump sum, which after taxes is $430,500.

The other option was a $50,000 annuity over a 20-year period.

“This is crazy,” she added. “It’s just wild.”
