Tech stocks: Yahoo, Microsoft on front burner
Tech investors were mostly focused on Yahoo's $1.1 billion acquisition of the micro-blogging website Tumblr, which the Internet portal confirmed Monday.
Yahoo shares rose 0.2% to just $26.58.
Apple shares jumped 2.2% to $442.93. The PC and gadget maker reported record-breaking retail revenue per visitor online as sales on its app store recently topped 50 billion.
Shares of Microsoft rose 0.5% to $35.06 on speculation that the software giant may purchase all of book retailer Barnes & Noble. It already owns a 17% stake in the Nook e-reader division of Barnes & Noble.
Facebook shares fell 1.9% to $25.76 after reports that its efforts to acquire social navigation app Waze have hit a snag.
SAP, the business management software firm, saw shares fall 0.6% to $80.41.
PC manufacturer Hewlett-Packard shares fell 0.4% to $21.18.
Shares in mobile technology manufacturer Nokia rose 0.8% to $3.76 a share, while shares in Advanced Micro Devices rose to 0.7% to $4.10 a share.
