Do good while you shop with these Black Friday tips
Sure, Black Friday is basically a consumerist free-for-all where we grab all of the deals and buy all of the things. But why not be philanthropic while scoring big on sales? Here are ways to do just that:
Shop at Patagonia: The outdoors brand announced that 100% of its profits in stores and online on Black Friday will go to fund grassroots environmental organizations. (The company has donated 7.1 million to fund environmental work.)
Shop online at Cuyana: Every online purchase made on Black Friday, the startup will donate to H.E.A.R.T (Helping Ease Abuse Related Trauma), which helps children of abuse.
Shop adoption through Zappos: Electronics aside, sometimes the best holiday buys come with fur and four legs. Black Friday through Cyber Monday, Zappos will cover adoption fees for cats or dogs adopted through Best Friends Animal Society or select locations in the No More Homeless Pets Network.
Participate in Kohl’s Cares: All items purchased from Kohl's Cares line, which includes children's books and stuffed animals, are donated to health and education initiatives from children worldwide. Kohl's collected almost $300 million with this program since 2000, according to its website.
Shop brands with a socially conscious business model: Many companies were established with philanthropy in mind. Love Your Melon, for example, gives a hat to someone going through cancer treatment every time you buy one. Thinx underwear sends money to AFRIpads in Uganda to help make menstrual pads. Other companies include Toms, Warby Parker, Bombas, Faucet Face and Lifestraw.
#OptOutside : Don't think shopping is the reason for the season? REI is asking people to ditch Black Friday lines, and instead find something to do in nature.
Participate in #GivingTuesday: Burnt out from buying? Give back Nov. 29 by offering time, donations or your voice to make a difference in someone else's life.
