Incoming Paste BN editor accepts national award as editor of the year

PHOENIX — Nicole Carroll, current editor of The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com and newly named editor in chief of Paste BN, was honored Thursday night in Washington, D.C., as the nation's top editor by the National Press Foundation.

The foundation announced late last year that it had selected Carroll for its Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year award, an honor named for the editor who led the Washington Post during the Watergate era.

The foundation cited Carroll's leadership and specifically noted "The Wall," a landmark multimedia reporting project from 2017. Journalists from The Republic and other newsrooms in the Paste BN NETWORK spent months exploring the idea of President Trump's proposed border wall in multiple formats, including video documentaries, helicopter video of the 2,000-mile border, virtual reality and a podcast series Carroll hosted.

“I absolutely believe our purpose is to spread truth and to educate and empower our community,” Carroll said when the award was announced. “An educated citizenry is central to democracy, and we play a huge role in that. We’re proud to play a huge role in that.”

Carroll on Wednesday was named the next editor in chief of Paste BN, the nation's largest newspaper.
